Your instructors have defined technical terms, whereas Kurzweil is using 'emulate' in the more common sense of creating a system that behaves similarly for equal inputs using analogous processes to (processes modeled on) those of the human brain. His position, as far as I understand it, is closer to what you have termed *replication*, in that the processes will be modeled on those of the real-world system but not made of the same materials as the human brain.
