When they are used by SIP proxies: see latest bis, section 1.4 on how to
route SIP requests.
Also, there is a public version of a DNS SRV library at
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/sip/implementations.html. I have a much simpler
implementation that I can share with you if you like.
