I'm reviving a brief discussion that was started here previously. The problem is that the SIP phone does not always know what is its phone number. In fact, we have an entire setup in which neither of the phones know what their phone number is. All they really need to know is their Outbound Proxy. The proxy has the intelligence in that it knows to convert a telephone number to the associated sip phone. How can you deliver caller-id in such a system? The originator cannot add a 'Display Name' that will be appropriate. The only entity that can do that is the proxy.
