Sure

Let's take a couple of examples:

The easiest is a class 4 replacement. I have trunk gateways connected
on an ATM network, with a "softswitch" running MGCP or, more likely, Megaco.
I can use SIP between Softswitches, or I can use something like Q.BICC.

Another case is when I have a SIP end device on an ATM network. There
are some very interesting uses for such networks where reliability under
"surge" conditions is required.

I could also have a SIP end device that was Ethernet attached on a LAN,
interworked to an ATM core through a gateway to a WAN, using switched
virtual circuits across the WAN.
