What is the appropriate response code to be used
when a proxy server cannot contact a location
due to errors in resolving the address or in
case of transport failure?
404 "Not Found" - Does not seem appropriate since
it implies that the user does not exist in the
domain. The user may exist, and the registered
location may be unresolvable.
480 "Temporarily Unavailable" - This code would imply
the end-point was contacted successfully.
408 "Request Timeout" - This seems to be the closest
since it indicates the server's inability to contact
the next hop without implying anything about
the user not being part of the domain or not being
present at the contacted terminal.
My HTTP proxy responds with a 430 response when it
cannot resolve the URI.
