The gateway I was referring to emulates the proprietary digital phone. To the PBX, it is a proprietary phone. To a SIP phone, it is a SIP UA. You plug phone lines from a digital line card of the PBX to the gateway, and an Ethernet connection. Calls from sip phones to PBX extensions (or outside lines) are routed to the gateway, where they are placed on the PBX.
Calls from the PBX are turned into SIP calls to SIP phones. There are limitations of this approach, mostly the inability assign extensions to sip phones without requiring a port on the gateway per sip phone user. If you do use a port per user, it's expensive, but everything works. If you use a "pool" of gateway ports, you don't get correct callerId on outgoing calls. Incoming calls can be made to work if the line can have multiple extensions.
