After a SIP call has been established, what is the preferred way to detect that the far end is no longer participating in the call due to some external cause, such as a power outage, network partition, etc? The far end did not send a BYE, and will never send a BYE, but the near end thinks it is still connected and continues to send out RTP packets. One possibility for handling this situation is to detect that no RTCP packets have been received from the far end for some time period, and then disconnect the call. However, many IP endpoints do not support RTCP, so this solution is of limited use. Another possibility is to send an occasional (how often?) RE-INVITE request to the far end, and if no response is received, terminate the call. What is the preferred way of handling this situation according to the SIP and RTP standards? What is done in practice? Thank you for any information.
