When an end-device (typically a PSTN agteway) has no clue how long
a call can last and a proxy server does, it sounds like a reasonable
solution to me.

I have seen counter-proposals for implementing this scenario happy using
a B2BUA. session-timer sounds better to me because it takes no
session state in the network.
