I don't quite understand how a PSTN gateway connects to the PSTN. If I had a T1 data line, could I connect a PSTN gateway router to it and be (at least in theory) connected to the PSTN? How do I communicate with ma bell? Is there some sort of DNS registry like there is with IP? How does an ISP obtain PSTN phone numbers for its VoIP users?
