[ABN] Am very sorry for delayed response... I agree that Invite Transaction is bulkier than UPDATE request. But if we use UPDATE, there can't any more session timer negotiation for next session interval. I personally feel the Session-Expires value could change from time to time. Hence the session will be terminated if the Min-SE for an intermediate entity changed which is less than earlier negotiated Session-Expires value... Just because the session-expires value does not satisfy the criteria (Min-SE < SE) we should not take down the call... hence I feel the re-invite is better than UPDATE....
UPDATE only affects SDP offer/answer state while reINVITE affects both SIP signaling and SDP offer/answer states. I would prefer sending UPDATE for keep alive as it affects fewer states in the UA. Of course you have to check that the other UA supports it.
I think you are asserting that UPDATE doesn't affect session timer. That isn't the case.
Either reINVITE or UPDATE can be used to refresh the session timer, and so acts as a keep-alive between UAC and UAS.
