Hi,
It will depend upon the network scenario. For an end point opening and
closing a TCP connection for every call can be a big overhead. Therefore
UDP will score high as transport protocol. However one need to study the
impact of retransmissions in case of UDP which will lead to extra overhead
of parsing the retransmitted message, whereas in case of TCP the
retransmissions will not happen ( except some specific scenario of hop by
hop messages).
If you take the case of a proxy that can maintains a pool of reusable TCP
connection (with next hop/hops), ,using TCP would a better choice. In case
the security protocol like TLS is used, it is also used over TCP.
TCP also provides a benefit of sending big messages as a series of smaller
buffer to handle the low MTU in the path. Refer 18.1.1 for the same.

Subject: [Sip-implementors] SIP: TCP Vs UDP.
Hi,
I am trying to understand as to what are the advantages of running SIP on
TCP as transport layer compared to UDP.
SIP as a protocol more or less handles retransmission of request. Is there
any added advantage compared to running SIP on UDP.
Thanks,
Poojan.
