On the port numbers, the numbers would then be the TCP port
numbers. The port numbers for targets are obvious but the ports numbers
in CONTACT and like fields would be whatever local TCP port number was
picked by the stack. That would seem to mean I would require the SIP
stack to provide me with the local port number it choose for the SIP
session so that it could be added in the SIP header. Do you agree?

Port numbers are not limited to Invite message or Invite dialog usage
only. For example, the UAS can specify it's contact port number in 200
OK for INVITE where it wants to receive ACK for it. Similarly for
SUBSCRIBE/REFER messages, port number would mean where the
subscriber/referor wants to receive NOTIFY requests etc.
