The client may fetch existing registration bindings by sending a
REGISTER without a Contact header (see rfc3161, section 10.2.3).

Forked requests can be distinguished by their unique branch parameter
in the Via header.

Because of forking, the client may send one request, but receive
responses from multiple recipients. Each of those responses will be
distinguished (at minimum) by a unique To tag.
