I would like to bring to your attention a new initiative in the SIP
Forum to make recommendations on and stimulate implementation and
deployment of a basic UA configuration mechanism. The SIP configuration
framework (draft-ietf-sipping-config-framework-15) is now pretty mature
and some server and device developers are starting to implement. The
framework addresses a number of different use cases and is fairly
comprehensive. This does, however, mean that it appears as a significant
item to develop. On the other hand, the most pressing need is for a
basic bootstrap mechanism that will work in the most common situations
(e.g., ATA, soft client, enterprise phone) and is fairly easy to
implement.

A new UA configuration group has been established within the SIP Forum
Technical Working Group to advance this work. The an initial deliverable
in the form of a Technical Recommendation is to be produced, aiming at
having it substantially written by February/March 2009 with a view to
having some initial implementations to test at SIPit in May 2009. At
present we are seeking an editor for the work and hope to have proposals
for outline and scope for discussion at an ad hoc meeting during IETF 73
in Minneapolis. Thereafter work will progress through regular
teleconferences and email. The idea is to produce a fairly short
document specifying a basic bootstrap profile(s) of the SIP
configuration framework and a few essential parameters. Also
relationship to the Broadband Forum's TR-69 is being taken into account.

The group is interested in getting more potential device and server
developers on board, so that implementation experience can feed into the
work and also to encourage a good population of implementations for
testing at SIPit. If you would like to participate in this work, please
join the ua-config mailing list at:
