As others have noted, session timer can be used for this, and OPTIONS is 
a bad choice.

But note that session timer is primarily for the benefit of 
dialog-stateful *proxies*, because they have no way to test the dialog 
on their own. All session timer does is schedule a time when the dialog 
should be tested, and who should initiate the test. The test itself is 
an ordinary in-dialog message (INVITE or UPDATE). Either of the UAs in 
the dialog can do that on their own any time they have doubt that the 
session is still active. (E.g., when a UA notices that it hasn't 
received media for a long time it might decide to send a reINIVTE or 
UPDATE to test the dialog.)
