I don't know what you mean by "valid". Clearly, in this instance, the SUBSCRIBE has failed, and so doesn't extend the subscription. In general, such a SUBSCRIBE *should* extend the subscription, but to verify that the SUBSCRIBE should work in your instance, you'd have to check that the SUBSCRIBE was properly formed, etc. Given that you haven't given any details of what the messages are, it's hard to troubleshoot whatever your problem is.
