Because the opaque has to be returned, it can be used transport anything back to the challenger. >From RFC 2617: Because the client is required to return the value of the opaque directive given to it by the server for the duration of a session, the opaque data may be used to transport authentication session state information. It is up to the generator of the Authenticate challenge to decide what to use this opaque field for. It could be, for example, some kind of stateful information required by a stateless proxy.
