Yes you are right. It is only a workaround for OpenIMSCore, which always
supports both methods "auth" and "auth-int". I only needed a quick
possibility to register successfully on OpenIMSCore. In case of "auth-int"
only supplied by the server the registration will not work, that's clear.
In that case the answer "auth" is simply wrong.

A full patch requires to study RFC2617 to understand how the algorithm has
to be expanded to support "auth-int" and to implement that. I don't think
that my skills are sufficient to do that in a reasonable time (sorry).

But I hope that someone will do it.
