I think there are 2 applications.
1. ITSP interoperability which would mean sipXbridge work.
2. The work you have begun in the proxy.  

For item 2 I can't see how this would be useful if it didn't support end
to end TLS. (meaning all the way to the phone/gateways) You are right I
can see this taking lots of thought on the management side to deal with
certificates, etc...
