Dittos. I think installing 4.0.4 and doing an inplace upgrade is feasible,
but there were schema database changes, which you bypassed.

I would however point out, that this should be considered a "bug'. Restoring
an incomptible (or potentially incompatible) version was allowed. I would
think there should be a version file in the backup which the restore process
looks at to see if it is allowed.

You might ask the dev group, and file an enhancement request.
