That explains a lot. I hit this problem and thought it was something on my end. I "fixed" it by using a branch lower in the AD Tree. What is really a problem is users setting this up for the first time who put in "dc=ezuce, dc=com" to "start simply and avoid problems" like I did. In actuality it made things worse. Setting up LDAP is tough enough without getting bitten by this. In the interim there should be a note added to the config screen in 4.4 warning people to look out for the bug until it is fixed. The note should mention trying a branch lower in the tree if it isn't working. That note would have saved me a few hours of head scratching...
