Even though i don't know of any reason why 4.4 wouldn't build fine, I
strongly suggest looking 4.6 as things are much more modular to tackle
something like this.  4.6 as it stands is more solid than 4.4 but we
enabled more features and flexibility in 4.6 and it takes more testing
and exposes more bugs so it's not officially released just yet.
Hopefully 4.6 is in your plans at your site.

As far as your specific problem, Look in
/var/log/sipxpbx/sipxconfig.log for errors.
