Well, I found someone else with the same problem:
http://forum.voxilla.com/sipx-support-forum/sipxecs-single-cd-
installation-new-pc-27911.html
I also downloaded and tried out Mandrake Spring 2008 which worked
fine with the same system (using Disk Utility to burn the image).
That's now about FOUR other Linux boot disks that I've downloaded and
which have booted successfully. I'm getting quite a collection.
To me it seems to me to be proven that the problem is with the online
image, not the download or burn process.
The person above was able to download and install a newer build
(3.11) that worked; I tried that but no joy yet.

Russ,
I am not too linux familiar myself.
I am using a Mac to run SIPx on VMWare Fusion.
I think there may be one of two possible issues. What are you
using to burn the disk? The Finder, Disk Utility or Toast? If you
put in the burned disk into your Mac does it show up as an image or
as a disk?
If you don't have Toast [which I think works the best for
intraoperability btw mac/pc], keep the ISO image on the desktop,
open disk utility, you should see the ISO image on the left pane.
Select it and press burn. I think I had some issues where if you
just use the finder it was not burning it directly as an image that
can be booted directly when I was burning from the finder.

Hi Charles,
I'm burning the CDs on a Mac, as I did with the others (Elastix,
Trixbox) which worked fine. When I put the CD in the drive of the
Linux box, either while running TrixBox or Elastix (both are
CentOS 4.4 I believe), it is not mounted and when I do a "shutdown
-r now", it briefly displays "Trying to boot from CD: failed"
twice (for both drives).
So I can boot from the install CDs of these two (Elastix,
Trixbox), but not with the SIPx 3.10.1 CD. Trying to do a "mount /
dev/cdrom" gives me a mesage indicates there is no entry in fstab
or mtab for the CDROM. I don't know Linux enough to know what the
entry should look like and haven't found any help.
My current plan is to download another distro that will
automatically mount the SPX install CD so I can boot from it.
Thanks for your help.

Are you trying to burn on a mac or install on a mac with vmware
or parallels? When you say the boot ends up going to trixbox is
that on the mac also?
