putting multiple vm backends on a single raid 5 is a bad idea no matter how many drives you have. have you done any kind of performance testing on that array? i guarantee you the random i/o is garbage. i can't imagine the performance on those other vm's is very good if they're at all disk-heavy.
that said, five users seems to be about the limit for acceptable performance with virtualized sipx. i have a five-user vmware deployment that is working fine, but it's not sharing a raid 5 with a bunch of other vm's. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jhony Perez Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 10:17 AM To: Geoff Van Brunt Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [sipx-users] SipX on VMWare ESXi On my configuration, we are using 10K SCSI drives on RAID 5, we have 6 drives array. We are having issues but we are also running many more VMs besides the SipX one. Geoff Van Brunt wrote: > We are using Hyper-V in two different deployments and have no issues. We did have to install the "server extensions" or the voicemail quality was bad. One setup has about 40 users and gets several hundred calls a day. In that environment we have 4 other HEAVILLY trafficked VM's on the server as well, but it is quite beefy. I think the issues with voice quality may have to do with hard drive access. You need an SAS raid array. It can respond to requests from the Host OS much quicker than a SATA array let alone a single drive. > > Is anyone else seeing this? i.e. SAS raid =orking, others = limited success. > > Geoff Van Brunt > Information Technology Manager > Corporate Administration > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jhony > Perez > Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 6:11 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [sipx-users] SipX on VMWare ESXi > > > Hello everyone, > > I have SipX 3.10.2 with CentOS 5 running on a VMWare ESXi server, > I've assign 1GB of RAM and selected 2 CPU during the install, the > system seems to run just fine but we started having intermittent > issues with voicemail quality, at first it was only on the playback of > the message but now it seems to be on the message itself, as we can > hear it during the playback from forwarding it to email. > > I've dedicated resources to the SipX, (1GHz and 1GB RAM) now I'm > going to monitor the server closely but if this continues to happen > I'm gonna have to move it to a dedicated server.
