We're using Cisco CallManager as our gateway, but we had to put an SBC
in front of sipXecs. So it looks something like:

CM --(SIP trunk)--> OpenSBC --> SipXecs

We discovered that CallManager -- at least the version we're running --
doesn't handle SIP REFERs when providing a SIP trunk, effectively
breaking the auto attendant for calls coming in via the trunk. OpenSBC
is able to handle the REFERs, resolving that issue. I wonder if
sipXbridge in version 4 would be able to handle REFERS...?

Other than that, CM seems to be working well for us. I haven't
investigated the licensing side, but my understanding is that the
licensing works differently when a trunk is being provided vs. the
licensing for having real users managed in CM.

So on the topic of gateways...do many of you use Cisco as a voice
gateway? I use one as a gateway for my lab, but haven't researched the
price point to determine if its economical as a standard solution, but
it seems to do the job fine...and its familiar code for those with a
Cisco VoIP background.

Thoughts?

I'll throw in my 2 cents here. I have an AudioCodes MP114 at my office,
an MP114 at client site and a Mediant 600 at another client. In addition
I've just swapped out my MP114 at my office for a Patton SmartNode 4114.

The MP114's aren't great... using them for faxing (T38 to Exchange 2007
UM) is a bit patchy. An HP fax machine I have completes faxes all the
time. A Dell fax machine never completes - the MP114 just doesn't pick
up the fax tones. AudioCodes support can't tell me why. I'm inclined to
think that this is an issue with crappy POTS lines as the Mediant 600 at
a client site is doing the same job (in fact it's only used for faxing
into Exchange UM) and works like a champ. Of note is that the Mediant
shipped with a firmware that didn't work for the US market... try to
configure it for a T1 and it would error, barf and then put all settings
back to E1. That provided me with hours of entertainment. Lastly,
messing around with the gain levels on the MP114s to get enough volume
but no distortion or echo was a complete nightmare I never wish to
experience again.

The Patton gateway initially looked like rocket science, but to be fair
I did only just pull it out of the box and hook it up yesterday morning.
Took me an hour to pull a config from the Patton support site, tweak it
and get it up and running. Upgrading the firmware broke the config (as
stated in the documentation) and it took me another hour or so to sort
it out. If you're familiar with Cisco IOS you won't have any problem
learning it though. Unfortunately the Patton's don't appear to do SIP
over TCP. If you're doing SipX that doesn't really come into it but if
you want to send calls directly to OCS or Exchange you'll have issues.
I'll happily stand corrected on that, though.

As for support, you can't contact AudioCodes support directly (unless
you pay), all support has to be done through your reseller. The reseller
contacts the distributor, the distributor either resolves the issue or
sends it direct to AudioCodes. It's all a bit long winded and in the
case of my distributor they won't talk directly to the client.

I don't have much experience with Patton's support as yet but I sent
them an email yesterday and got a response within an hour. No complaints
there. The issue I'm trying to resolve is that the Patton isn't picking
up incoming caller ID.

The AudioCodes gateways are always a battle. Their lack of technical
support along with their poor audio quality drove me away from them
(this experience is back in the mp-104 and mp-108 days).

I tried Mediatrix also and they were horrific back in the day. You
actually had to use an SNMP tool to set the unit up. It was like
pulling teeth.

For me the Patton started a little rocky until I got used to it. They
are very powerful and router like. To this day I rarely use the web
interface and usually head straight for the command line. The Patton
tech support is pretty good and we have some good example configurations
in the Wiki.

As a new convert to VoIP and Sip-X, I'd like to hear what the rest of
the mailing list users experiences are with gateway devices. For the
installation I'm working on I have to link into existing Siemens
switches for my outside lines, and so I purchased a Mediant 1000
modular
gateway to allow me to experiment a bit and to upgrade as I roll out
Sip-X to the users. It's hideously complex, has no manual, and

support

appears to be handled via putting requests in bottles and throwing

them

in the sea. From speaking off-board with Milosz he has had the same
experience as myself and has since started buying Pattons.

Can the rest of you let me know if you have significant experience of

a

particular gateway, good or bad, so that we noobies know what to avoid
or aim for? You can read specs or the occasional review, but that's
not
substitute for experince with these devices.
