This is to discuss the use case for directory / phone book as well as
search for contacts.
We got the following:
a) Speed dial list on the phone / softphone with BLF presence
mixed with 'external' contacts that do not have presence
b) IM buddy list that displays in an IM client and allows
click-to-chat and click-to-call
c) Phone directory: This is the directory loaded into the phone.
Usually phone memory is limited so that for larger deployments the phone
cannot hold the entire enterprise phone book
d) The corporate directory typically accessible through the
email/calendar system and using LDAP or AD
e) The user DB held by sipXecs and used to build the current
directory
Questions:
a) What should the relationship be between speed dial lists and
buddy lists, if any? A hard phone typically has a very limited number
of speed dial keys, and therefore can hardly display a user's buddy list
entirely. In addition, the speed dial list will include PSTN numbers
that are not represented as 'buddies'.
b) How do we do search for directory entries? The user would like
to be able to easily search the corporate directory etiher from the
phone (hard or soft), from a mobile device, or from an IM client.
Especially hard phones have limited memory for directory entries and
therefore can often only hold a small subset of the enterprise
directory. Search, therefore, has to be able to go beyond the locally
stored directory and tap into a directory source that is unified for all
clients. Some phones offer LDAP to do this.
a. What mechanism should the different clients use to search a
directory (hard phone, softphone, IM client, Web user portal)?
b. Where does the corporate directory reside (in particular, should
sipXecs hold a synchronized copy of the corporate directory if there is
one availble from the email/calendar system or other LDAP source)?
c. Should the search include a personal address book? I.e. an
address book created by the user in addition to the enterprise
directory.
c) To what extent shall the user be able to customize the
directory?
a. Should there be a personal directory that will get uploaded to
the user's phone (this is what we have today)?
b. What is the source for personal directory information that we
should synchronize with?

Import .csv data or vcards into the sipXecs user portal?

Synchronize with Outlook or other email client?
