We recently purchased a Polycom SoundPoint 320 and would like to get some
feedback regarding the volume level from others who are using SoundPoint
phones.

What we've found is that the microphone quality is excellent on the
SoundPoint. Anyone we speak to hears us loud and clear, regardless if it's a
local extension to another IP phone or to an external landline. In fact, the
volume and clarity from the SoundPoint microphone is much better than our
legacy system.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the speaker in both the handset
and speakerphone of the SoundPoint. We have found that the default volume
level of the phone is too low for hearing landline calls. This is very
noticeable when listing to voicemails, as the system prompts are much louder
than landline voicemails (no normalization).

To properly hear landline calls on the handset, we find the volume needs to
be between 90 to 100%. However, for system prompts and from other SoundPoint
phones, the default is sufficient, but 90 to 100% is too loud. This means we
have to adjust the volume quite frequently.

To properly hear landline calls on the speakerphone, we find that even if we
set the volume to 100%, it's only sufficient for one user if there is little
ambient noise. If there is more than one person in the room during the
conference or the ambient noise is high, we find the volume is too low
(especially when compared to our 15 to 20 year old legacy PBX). This may be
a deal breaker.

We are all lucky enough not to have any hearing impairments. Based on the
volume level, I don't see how anyone with even a slight hearing impairment
could use these phones, especially the speakerphone.

I have searched for reviews on this phone and have found no complaints about
the volume level. How do others here feel about the volume level? Does
anyone know if volume level (especially for the speakerphone) is any better
in the higher end phones? I have found no evidence that it is any different.

Regards,

Tim
