Two questions about upgrading:

I concur - the gui update still has some rough edges (which are on the
list to fix in 4.2).  It should work for single systems, but I think
that running yum from the shell is more likely to show any problem that
does occur.  Certainly reinstalling is not needed.

I'd use 'yum update sipxecs'
