I've gotten a few off-list requests for information about yesterdays
announcements regarding the sale of the Nortel Enterprise business.
For anyone not following them - Nortel[1] and Avaya[2] announced
yesterday that a bid from Avaya has been accepted as the so-called
'stalking horse' offer to purchase the Enterprise business of Nortel.
The short form is this:
* The sipXecs developers who are Nortel employees are all in this
division, so the news applies to us.
* This is the first step in a 'rule 363' bankruptcy auction [3].
* The sale process will take quite a while - assuming the
bankruptcy court accepts the proposal from Nortel, the auction
will run until September 15th, followed by some weeks or months
of due diligence, followed by more weeks or months of regulatory
approval.
* Avaya may or may not be the eventual winner of the auction -
this is the opening round, not the end.
* What the eventual winner will think of or do with the current
project and the developers is not currently knowable, and
probably won't be until well after the sale finally completes.
I'd like to ask that we _not_ spend time and energy on the sipXecs lists
speculating about this on our project lists. Frankly, speculation is
pretty pointless until some deal actually closes, which is certainly
months from now. When there's some definitive news, you'll hear it
pretty quickly here, but don't hold your breath. I'm betting that we'll
have done at least one more substantial release long before any deal
closes - we're fast accumulating new functionality.
I think I speak for all the Nortel-employed contributors on this project
when I say that we really appreciate your support of and enthusiasm for
sipXecs.
