I certainly hope it won't be the end of sipX. The way I see it Avaya 
could do one of two things:

1: Rebrand sipX as one of their own products much like Nortel did for 
SCS and leave the open source project as it currently is essentially 
keeping the project going as it currently stands. This would be ideal, 
but I'm not betting any money on this happening.

2: Drop funding and employees for the project and leave it up to the 
open source community to continue development efforts. While this might 
be detrimental to the project, it would allow the project to continue, 
albeit at a much slower pace.

If I understand correctly it would be impossible to completely close the 
project down as the open source community for this project is not 
"owned" by anyone in particular. (Correct me if I'm wrong).
