Since all of the hardware gateways for sipxecs are standalone appliances,
the only timing you would care about is timing for the CSU. Typically your
TELCO provides timing (example: for a PRI or switched T1) and you would
configure your appliance to be a slave (with the provider being the master).
This would be different if you were running devices back to back for
trunking to a local phone system, like during a conversion process, where
you would have to designate one as a master, and the other as a slave in
order to get them to sync.

Thankfully, sipXecs is blissful and uninvolved, so it can run uninterrupted.
