Is this correct?
Looking at the SIP angle alone, you can get away with using a SIP Domain alias that is publicly resolvable & routable however the concept of SIP Domain alias does not extend over to the XMPP. For XMPP to work, the SIP/XMPP Domain needs to be publicly resolvable and routable. Even if we wanted to extend the domain alias concept over to XMPP, that would be difficult because the authorization mechanism that it uses (SASL) explicitly checks that the XMPP domain the IM client thinks it connects to lines up with what the server thinks its domain name is. That check would not pass if we were to use domain aliases and XMPP authorization would fail. > > If this is correct then setting up a ".loc, or .local" > SIPDOMAIN also means you are setting up the XMPP domain, so > server to server federation will not work UNLESS your > SIPDOMAIN (and XMPP domain) are publicly resolvable domains. > The "invite" for XMPP would not use a server alias, and would > be sent from the SIPDOMAIN.
