Doug, I did an install on this machine with 4.0.4, using the manual-format option. When the disk was popped out after the reform, I inserted the 4.2.1 ISO, and did a complete installation. It worked this time. I think I'm starting to confirm that it is the format option on the 4.2.1 ISO. Two things I've noticed on it - a) it doesn't give the options for the type of partitions to set up b) when it is done, it doesn't pop the cd tray open to remove the ISO, and so it tries to re-install again. Hope this gives some clues. Additionally, the attendant custom recordings were not re-applied. Not sure if they weren't copied on the backup, or not restored on the restoration. It was an issue from back at 4.0.2 that I thought was incorporated into 4.2. I did see in logs you sent me earlier that openfire didn't install correctly because unpack200 wasn't avail. this happens when jdk isn't install.
