I was taking the secondary 8.8.8.8 forwarder out, because it was using it and
couldn't resolve any local hostnames.
The named.conf was where I found it and removed it from. It fixed the issue as
soon as I restarted named.

What is the best method for reconfiguring DNS on a sipx server?

I'm not certain what you are trying to do here, but one general guideline is
that you definitely want a DNS server on your sipXserver(s). They can simply
be "local caching servers" if that works for you. But having a local DNS
server improves the speed of the sipXecs server processes, because in many
circumstances they need to do DNS lookups.

In terms of files, the contents of /etc/resolve.conf should have only one
"nameserver" line, "nameserver 127.0.0.1".
