You say the problem is fixed in the next release, when is this planned
to be released?
Is there also a possibility for a patch, or is an upgrade really
necessary?

yes, it was unfortunately common and fixed in upcoming release
  http://track.sipfoundry.org/browse/XX-6671

there was a patch made by avaya that eats the error message which
leaves the search index silently busted. I originally rejected the
patch but i'm now having second thoughts.  Or maybe we can catch the
exception, and auto-rebuild the index for the user.  Back porting the
fix is not really an option, there were too many code changes.
