It's an anything can happen environment. Something can creep in and have an
unintended consequence. While it is normally OK to update, it is never
intended for a production system.

I have had several instances where coming from 4.2 to test the dev version I
was no longer able to get from one version to the next, and had to start
clean. When it is safe to upgrade, someone will say so, of course. I was
told this morning an update from 4.3 (dev) to the latest test of 4.4 didn't
work. Even if I try to go from 4.2.1 to the "beta" 4.4, I don't know if it
will upgrade smoothly or not, but it would not be a production system.
