Can your IM users chat with each other using their respective openfire
servers? Do your phones properly support RFC4235?

If so, I believe this works out of the box. You did not consult the source,
please refer to the wiki (sorry, I like to type kiwi, who is a troublesome
cat next door and likes to lay on, under or around my truck):
