We used isode imap gateway at two different sites to provide the needed idle support when connecting to Groupwise (no IDLE support in imap).
It works fine. It simply use pop in the background and exposes IMAP to the client (in this case sipx). It is difficult thinking that a gateway will be the right answer, I'd like to see an API into gmail myself first, but even google has a problem letting people into the message store. I don't think Redmond has EVER been any different.
