I was able to get on a SuSE Linux box (v8.1) and try the build. It also
detonated like RedHat when e2fsprogs-devel was not installed.

In fact, it revealed more hidden dependencies. For example, after I talked
the owner of the SuSE box into installing e2fsprogs-devel, the build
detonated at raidtools because popt was not installed. Of course, then you
get to choose whether to install popt-devel-1.6 or popt >= 1.7, because the
popt.h file showed up in the 'base' rpm at 1.7. After that, the xfsprogs
compile detonated because xgettext was not installed. I decided to stop
bugging the owner of the box at that point.

So, it looks like the two I reported originally are just the tip of the
iceberg in terms of hidden rpm dependencies. As you can probably tell, this
is becoming more educational than I thought; but less entertaining. It
certainly requires a more systematic approach (and a machine that I can more
easily thrash) than I'm using right now. I will be able to get a test box in
a couple weeks or so.
