My original intent was not perfect emulation of the existing which command,
but the ability to figure out if a command was available for running without
dumping out to a shell, and without hardcoding the path to the command.

Is there a situation where this isn't fulfilling those needs? Or are we
just debating if this function should do perfect emulation?

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
