Howdy,

This is still a fair bit duct tape and bailing wire, but with the rough
instructions here, and the couple of attachments included, I have managed
to get systemimager 3.2.2 to build, install, and work in a PXE environment
with Opteron (x86_64) machines. Since I have not yet found a set of
instructions in the mailing list archives that discuss the actual
procedure from "not working" to "working" I figured I would submit these
files and instructions, even though there are still some rough edges
(i.e., you will almost certainly need to do some fiddling to get it to
work).

This install uses a 64-bit kernel and binaries throughout, thereby
avoiding the unpleasant business of booting with a 32-bit kernel and then
attempting to chroot into a 64-bit environment.

For starters, the systemimager.diffs file contains a few minor patches to
some files in the stock 3.2.2 distribution, along with a couple of
comments at the bottom which refer to the linux.x86_64.config file which
is also included. Essentially, the patches fix some library path issues
that I encountered while working on a RedHat system since the 64-bit
libraries were located in /lib64 rather than /lib, and so forth. You may
need to modify these patches appropriately if your library paths differ.
The patches also add x86_64 as a valid architecture, and point its kernel
config to the appropriate config file (the second attachment).

The kernel config I have included is likely to require some manipulation.
In essence, though, it provides a basic non-SCSI kernel with a few extras
compiled in -- notably ext2, and notably NOT devfs. As pointed out in
several places, devfs seems not to work right for x86_64 in the 2.4 kernel
series. Further, in my experiments, loading a cramfs initrd image in a
64-bit kernel doesn't seem to work -- or, at least, the one that was
produced by the systemimager install just resulted in a complaint about
bad magic numbers and a kernel panic. Instead, I created an ext2
filesystem, copied the cramfs contents into it, compressed it, and used
*that* as the initrd. Thus ext2 needing to be compiled into the kernel.

The initrd image as an ext2 filesystem is too large by far to fit on a
floppy, by the way, so this particular method will only be suitable for
PXE or CD installs. Sorry about that caveat, but I simply could not
wrangle the cramfs initrd into submission.

While the initrd image produced as above will at least get you closer to
booting, it is not complete in itself. Because I could not make devfs
work, I needed to add appropriate /dev entries in the initrd. An ls -lR
in the initrd dev directory for my install shows:

Obviously, you will need to add/remove device nodes as appropriate for
your system. I don't know of a sure-fire way to get this right without a
few iterations -- in my case, I simply ran until things died because of a
missing /dev entry and then added the appropriate entry into my initrd.
I may have botched the numbering for the vc entries -- but with that
setup, I at least managed to make the system install things properly.

The initrd also had a few other problems because the install scripts that
created the initrd image didn't really understand 64-bit libraries. I
needed to make symlinks so that /lib64 existed, and so forth. In
addition, there were a few related problems, as well as an attempt to
start devfsd (which won't work) in the functions called by rcS; my patch
to that is included in the init.diffs attachment. For what it's worth,
you can recognize these problems as either init not being found (the
/lib64 link missing in the initrd) or the pivot root failing (the rcS
script fails to make /lib64 links on the new root).

The last major systemimager issue that I encountered was that the
autoinstall script that was generated from my golden client somehow
created and mounted its filesystems in the wrong order. In other words,
it created and mounted /export, and *then* created and mounted /.
Obviously, since / was mounted second, nothing could see /export. Thus,
the /export contents were copied into /, and the attempt to unmount
/export after rsync failed since it occurred before the attempt to unmount
/. I simply modified the autoinstall script by hand to put the filesystem
mount/create bits in the right order. I don't know if this is a known
issue, or if I just lucked out. ;)

While there were still remaining issues at this point, all of those were
due to misconfiguration on the golden client, and thus having a bad image
to populate out to the other client nodes. The steps above were
sufficient in my case to at least boot, sync, and reboot my new nodes
successfully.

I apologize for the fact that much of this is by hand rather than being
scripted, but I figured I should at least contribute the bits that I have
before I get hurried off to another project. :)

Thanks,

Dave Meyer

Only in systemimager-3.2.2/patches: linux.x86_64.config

=> NOTE: This file is located in this directory. You may simply copy it
from here to the patches directory before doing the build.

=> NOTE2: The file here is the final one that I was able to make work.
In particular, it removes all SCSI support and adds non-module ext2
support. If you are able to make a cramfs filesystem work, or need
SCSI modules, you may wish to reconfigure those portions of the kernel.
