I think building on debian stable should be a requirement ;-).  Building in 
that environment is a good check on when the build is going "out of bounds". 

I think I figured out what the build was doing late last night, and I coerced 
it into building module-init-tools.  I'm going to test it when I get back 
home this evening.  I really want to get this working because I think it's 
kinda evil to force 2.4.x kernel users to clobber their build host's module 
utilities.
