For 2.6.x kernel compatibility, you need to download and use the latest source from CVS.
3.4.x was built on debian 3.0r3 stable. (gcc-2.9x, kernel 2.4). I verified the build on rh 9 and FC1/2 as well. I didn't test with FC3 or SuSE 9 because you need gcc <= 3.2 to build the i386boot-standard kernel.
