Hi Brian:

I don't think we're quite ready for 3.7.4 yet, there are some issues
which we need to look at:

1) network performance issues with si_monitortk - currently the code in
trunk provides full stdout so the virtual console is MUCH MORE useful.
However, without --no-listing in si_mkautoinstallscript, performance is
really bad. I have discussed with Andrea before about this, and I guess
if people are okay with --no-listing then I guess this is not a huge
deal.

2) Andrea recently added a new argument --kernel for si_prepareclient
such that you can select a different kernel/modules path when generating
the ramdisk with UYOK. The goal is such that you can run
si_prepareclient in an image chroot (like for OSCAR images). The issue
with this is the INSMOD list will end up being emtpy, because you're not
running on a live system and if you boot a node with that ramdisk no
drivers will be loaded - we need to get hotplug/udevd working to fix
this.

The rationale behind this is such that on a headnode/imageserver, you
can use SystemIntaller to create images of multiple distro/architecture
and if you like you can also generate UYOK kernel/ramdisk with these
images. But until the issue I mentioned is fixed, this won't really be
feasible.

Perhaps there is a better way to do this? Maybe si_mkbootpackage? ;-)

3) There are also some minor issues with si_monitortk in regards to Tk
portability issues between SUSE and Red Hat (Andrea knows all about this
:-) )

Thanks,

Bernard

Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
Get stuff done quickly with pre-integrated technology to make your job easier
Download IBM WebSphere Application Server v.1.0.1 based on Apache Geronimo
