That is only a secondary reason. The primary reason is that it requires people to both 1) be on the list and 2) post from their subscribed address. (Note that my initial response to this was held for moderation because of #2). I maintain *many* lists with mailman. The way we've dealt with this problem is by having system-wide spam/virus filters, which drop the obvious crap, and then use a Mailman w/ spamassassin support, which holds the iffy for moderation.
