I tried this, but devfs support has been disabled in the sources for x86_64 in kernels newer than 2.4.22. With older kernels I never managed to build an initrd that the kernel could mount. I finally ended up booting the boxes on the 32-bit kernel, installing a minimal set of 32 bit binaries needed to run the SystemConfigurator stuff after the chroot on the gold client, and tweaking the PATHs in the autoinstall script to point to the 32 bit binaries.
