I tried a bunch of different things and finally what seemed to solve the problem was setting up an image server with debian stable, installing the packages from download.systemimager.org (rather than setting up a debian testing box and installing from the testing dist). Why this makes a difference I don't know.

sorry, I sent a reply to this, but found out my mail config was busted last week :( 3.0.1-11 packages were broken - 3.2.0 is in sid, and it doesn't have this problem.

Ah, I tried backing up to 3.0.1-9, I'll check.

I got other weirdness-es, like the install would go fine but when the client rebooted the bootloader would not load fully.

grub? try lilo.

I know grub was failing, seems like lilo was too.
