The addclients deal really only does a few things - the most important of
which is to create soft links of your nodes to the script in question.

For example, my /var/lib/systemimager/scripts directory looks like this:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        13258 Sep 24 09:47 2600-new.master
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        13306 Sep 24 09:42 2600-pbs.master
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        14743 Sep 28 12:27 2600-standard.master
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        14721 Sep 28 12:22
2600-standard.master.save
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           20 Sep 28 11:55 dillon.sh ->
2600-standard.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           20 Sep 28 11:55 dowler.sh ->
2600-standard.master
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          988 Sep 28 11:49 hosts
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        14011 Sep 27 09:26 small-pbs.master
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        14021 Sep 27 15:57
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:03 wolf01.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:04 wolf02.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:04 wolf03.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:04 wolf04.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:04 wolf05.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           21 Sep 27 16:04 wolf06.sh ->
small-pbs-scor.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf07.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf08.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf09.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf10.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf11.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf12.sh ->
2600-pbs.master
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           15 Sep 24 10:13 wolf13.sh ->
2600-pbs.master

You can see the soft links-- and can even see that I manually fiddled with
some of the nodes-- they do not all point to the same script(image) file.

With some simple manipulation, you can fiddle or re-create the links all you
want.

For your second question--- I think the upgrade documentation is described
in the manual? Either that, or you need to basically edit the files, AND
the rsync stubs directory entries, and it should all work.
