I would like to draw to the lists attention that this (killer application) error "could not stat device /dev/sda" and similar also occur if one builds an autoinstalldiskette using a different version of systemimager-boot.

It is a gotcha that should be in the manual I believe.  This is the second time I have been hit by this problem.  Call it a senior moment if you will as it was several years ago I struggled with the same issue.

I run a debian webserver and imageserver but my workstation runs Mandriva. Instalation of the latest packages are different versions on the different distributions hence a autoinstalldiskette made on the Mandriva machine will fail with the abovementioned message when cloning the image from the debian imageserver.

Could there be an error message that tells when there is a version mismatch?

An easier way is to use the UseYourOwnKernel functionality in 3.6.x (run si_prepareclient --norsyncd) on the headnode, this should create boot binaries (kernel, initrd.img) that should support your hardware which you could use to boot your clients.

Cheers,

Bernard
