ok, I found it and it was indeed silly.  I forgot that when you install 
a new boot rpm it DOESN'T update the kernel and initrd in /tftpboot.  
This happens to me almost every time I upgrade!  We could certainly have 
an interesting conversation about why I think this is not a good thing, 
but perhaps the best solution would be a friendly message from the boot 
rpm to remind fools like me that I shouldn't forget to do this.  sigh...
